One of the better zombie novels. A good way to start the series. It goes downhill in the next novel, though.
There's a lot of good stuff in this book, but there's a lot of nonsense too. Most of the character motivations are poorly thought out, and there appears to be a lack of cohesion that may betray the novel's web origins (and the whole thing needs proof-reading), but it is, at heart, a rollicking good read that's very hard to put down.
While it seems as much indebted (if not more so) to the Resident Evil style of zombies rather than the Romero movie type, Monster Island throws enough into the mix to stand on its own. There's little character progression, and the main protagonist's rationales are sketchy and lack depth, but I'd certainly like to read the next book, which is a prequel and may improve upon this fledgling effort.
The plot is very interesting, there is a nice storyline..however I was distracted by the real lack of character development. I have to care whether these people make it or not- and I didn't.
There was a good zombie book lost inside somewhere spoil by the stupid premise of going all the was to New York, when Greece, Italy, France would have the drugs required???
The Scottish Bog Mummy, the giant Zombie and other strange plots spolit what could have been a good book.
Disappointing second half ruins the possibilities set up in the first.
found it a little slow to start but enjoyed the book once the storey and characters developed, much prefer the prequel/sequel, Monster Nation takes you right back to the begining and where the outbreak starts.
Not only zombies but also several ancient Egyptian mummies - and with self-awareness to boot! Plus a bunch of gun-toting schoolgirls too! What's not to like?! Novel (no pun intended) ideas or what? Yeah, okay, so it's not great literature but it sure moves along at one hell of a cracking pace. A most engaging and entertaining read, methinks.
