When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked? And what is the true nature of evil?
Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first-class citizens, Munchkinlanders ... (show more)
The story was almost too long for itself. I loved Elphaba, I didn't like the useless (almost tedious) story in the middle which I don't think added anything to the narrative. A good read, but could have been better.
I liked it, but I liked it mostly for just for Elphaba, the titular Wicked Witch of the West. Is it strange to say I liked Elphaba more than the book? Elphaba is such a memorable, interesting and strong character. The rest of the book? It ebbs and flows with its story strength. I would still recommend it.
OMG, luv it luv it luv it! Wow, this has really given me a whole new spin on Wizard of Oz, and believe me it is nothing like it. This depiction is very, very political and controversial. It focuses on racism, tyranny, domestically, and many more real world issues.
Read it, read it, read it!
interesting beginning, torturous middle, lustless ending. the concept was there, it just didn't do it for me. the play is a thousand times better -- and that's not because it's visually appealing with a well written score. while i appreciate the author's intent to fill the reader with enough detail to make it seem as if you were there, a lot of it -- in my opinion -- was unnecessary. on the plus side, it IS highly detailed and even helped me fill a few holes while watching the play.
A good book, interesting to read and compare with the story as we all know it.
I know so many people liked this book but I HATED it. I read it for my book club years ago and it was such a struggle to finish.
I was soooo bored, I actually stopped reading it. First book I've ever done that with, EVER!
