In this tour de force of psychological unease--now a major motion picture starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Sinead Cusack--McEwan excavates the ruins of childhood and uncovers things that most adults have spent a lifetime forgetting--or denying. "Possesses the suspense and chilling impact of Lord of the Flies."--Washington Post Book World.
Lovely! I love that sudden weird freedom with no responsibility. reminds me of some looong anarchistic dream...
Ian McEwan draws me in with his beautiful writing, then shocks me with his content. This is probably his intent, and he certainly has fans, but I don't really want to read about consensual incest between teenage siblings. It completely creeped me out. I feel dirty now.
McEWan is a great writer, but the content matter- wow (in a- it's a lucky thing I did not throw up inside my own mouth- way). Ugh.
I will be wondering for years why Mr. McEwan wrote this short book. Material is too disturbing for me to recount.
