Besides being an engrossing forensic novel, it offers interesting social commentary on alternative religions. While not "approving" them, the author takes a fair, objective look at Wicca. She discusses the social context from which come the hatred and fear of Wicca and Satanism.
I thought this book was great. Couldn't put it down. There were a couple places I thought, "come on, get on with it", but overall very good. Not much forensic stuff in it.
Sometimes a little preachy, but an interesting mystery. Why won't the romance settle down?
This is the first of Kathy Reichs' novels I have read. I expected to read about a Temperence much like the one portrayed on the television show; but this one is completely different. This is not as heavy as the title and jacket might suggest. It pales next to Cornwell or Gardner in its intensity. However, I would likely read another of Ms. Reich's novels.
I didn't particularly like this one. I'm annoyed with the alcoholism thing. I read in the back that Kathy Reichs wanted to make her character "real" so she did the alcohol thing. I'm so sick of every author who wants to make their characters "real" making them addicts. THERE ARE REAL PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT ADDICTED TO ALCOHOL. Also the book was pretty slow.
Temperence is pretty good here. I thought it was a little dry, Kind of like a CSI doctor wrote it. Oh wait, a CSI doctor wrote this. Other than that it was pretty good. Needs more blood with a sprinkle of darkness....not quite a devilish as the cover suggests.
The latest Tempe Brennan novel, much better than that horrid travesty of a TV show. Good, accurate info about fringe religions and the differences among them. One of her best.
